Modified Licensed Driver Program (with SkidCar)

Licensed drivers under the age of 20 can sharpen driving skills, obtain important traffic safety information and get valuable hands-on experience dealing with emergency driving situations and/or snowy/icy roads. This program does not replace the state certified driver education program for permitted drivers however, students who did not have the opportunity to take a formal 10 week program before they got their license, will now have the ability to get some important additional training. Students completing the nine hour program will not receive an ODOT certified driving waiver but will receive a certificate of completion, which some insurance companies will accept for a potential insurance discount.

Program Description:

  • One hour evaluation of driving skills to determine what should be covered during the program
  • One hour of classroom education
  • Four hours of behind the wheel with an ODOT apporved instructor
  • Four hours of SkidCar training through Deschutes County Risk Management

Scheduling: Our scheduling goal is to complete the student’s training in one month or less. The skid-car program will be scheduled separately by Laurie Smith at Deschutes County Risk Management. Classroom and behind-the-wheel sessions are scheduled individually with a High Desert Driver Education instructor.

Special Project Program

Occasionally, there are student drivers who do not fit into any of the other programs, but would still like to have some instruction. Also, a student driver may have completed one of our traditional programs, but still need more instruction. This program will be tailored specifically to the needs of the individual student.

Program Description: The program may include classroom and/or behind-the-wheel instruction designed to fit the needs of the student. All instruction will be taught by ODOT certified instructors.

Scheduling: When you register, you will be able to choose from one of our regular locations. As soon as we receive your registration, we will contact you regarding creating and scheduling your individualized program.
